WNBA Canada Poster for Rogers Place

This is the second basketball related piece I have created for Rogers Place in collaboration with the Oilers Entertainment Group.

I collaborated with Chris NgMukYuen on this piece. In this case, I set the art direction and I provided a few iterations to nail down the composition.

I’m particularly fond of the artistic abstract components of this piece. I have a long standing practice of painting and drawing people. It’s wonderful when those well developed skills overlap with my commercial design work.

It was a joy to work on this piece. It’s wonderful to get the opportunity to work on projects like this, Basketball is my favourite sport, it’s for a local organization and Kia Nurse is a Canadian athlete.

Typography

For the typographic design of this poster, I pursued simplicity using a geometric, solid sans-serif type face Azo Sans Uber. I colourized the type and treated it with some texture in Photoshop.

I enjoy pursuing the right composition with projects like this. It is a combination of sketching, scouring the internet and composing elements in Photoshop and Illustrator.

This piece has ample abstract exploration and integration into the figures. The people are emerging from the energy of the shapes and colours around them.

These abstract elements exude pure joy and energy they denote the pleasure of sport and the energy of competition.
